4-Part Herbal Series: Wednesdays, September 4, 11, 18, 25, 2024
Part 1: Herbs Through Thyme, Sept 4, 2024
6:15pm to 7:30pm
This first class in our four-part series will explore how our predecessors foraged, gathered and harvested local wild botanicals - more commonly known as 'weeds' - and used them for food and medicine. Without easy access to professional medical help, they counted on flowers, leaves, roots, bark, berries, bulbs... whatever grew locally in their region each season to keep themselves healthy and nourished.
The healing and edible plants they found underfoot right here in Hunterdon, Warren and Sussex counties are still abundant and just as eager to help us today! No matter where you live, the wild summer botanicals growing in full force all around you are calling to be harvested and purposed for your benefit. Take care of the land, and it will take care of you - through the hands of time!
In this class, Donna Reynolds of Willow Moon Herbals, will guide us in an herbal walk - citing plant identification and it’s properties for medicine and/or for our food! Sturdy footwear or boots recommended!

Part 2: Your Medicinal Backyard, Sept 11, 2024
6:15pm - 7:30pm
This is the second class in our 4-part series.
Can you hear it? The call of the wild weeds… “What grows around you is often what you need the most.” When plants show up for you, will you know how to recognize them?
In part one of our series, we explored the general botanicals in our area likely to have been used by past peoples (that lived here) for food and medicine. In this session, we go deeper and it gets more personal!
In this class, we will learn that plants choose to sprout where they do, symbiotically answering the call of your body’s chemistry by appearing in your yard and garden. The more time you commune with your property and touch its soil, the clearer the signal for its plantlife to adapt/customize to your needs.
Learn how many of the plants that are underfoot and seem unremarkable are filled with properties that are healing and help bring balance to the body. Oftentimes, when a garden or yard gets a little overgrown, ambitious gardeners will pull up every stray botanical that "lookslike a weed." Whole mats of chickweed, clusters of purslane, groundcovers, sorrel, burdock, dandelions, or clumps of plantain are discarded and their healing medicine is wasted!
Come with us as we cover an assortment of the more usual plant visitors found here in northern NJ. Through our intensive visual presentation of these botanicals’ physical features, characteristics and properties, you will learn to recognize their arrival, their purpose and how to best benefit from them. “When we see plants as teachers, we understand the abundant gifts they offer us as they share their many practical, nourishing and medicinal gifts.”
*If time and weather allow us the opportunity for a short exploratory walk in the yard, we highly recommend bringing weather appropriate clothing, garden boots, and insect repellent.
*Those who sign up to these introductory classes and want to learn more will be better prepared and considered for our Herbal Apprentice Program.
Bonus! All participants will get 15% off both of our professional online supplement dispensaries. That's an additional 5% discount as we head into the fall and winter seasons!

Part 3: Your Apothecary Kitchen, Sept 18, 2024
6:15 to 7:30pm
This is the third class in our four-part series.
In Part One, we uncovered our forefathers’ basic outdoor medicine cabinet using local weeds.
In Part Two, we explored a fuller expanse of medicinal botanicals available in our backyards and neighborhoods, effectively tripling the size of Part One’s medicine cabinet.
In this third session, we take to the kitchen to transfer the medicine of these botanicals into ingestible or topical remedies for our families. We will learn about the several different mediums that can be infused with the medicine of the botanicals in our yards, and even from some of the more common food items in our pantries. Come join us as we play in the Celestial Acres Sanctuary's kitchen with the likes of honey, garlic, ginger, vinegar, onions, peppers, horseradish, etc. Depending on time and class size, we may also take a sneak peek into homemade cultured kefir, homemade liniment and an herb-infused honey.
